Foreign people must acquire Inner Line Permit (ILP) to go to Sikkim in addition to an Indian Visa. It could be acquired from all Indian embassies, Sikkim Tourism Offices at New Delhi, Kolkatta, District Magistrates Office of Darjeeling, Siliguri, and Rangpo. 

Foreign people will be issued an ILP on the spot with out any hold off provided photocopies of the passport and visa together with two pass port photographs of the candidates are made available. The allowable duration of the stay for overseas tourists is 15 days at first. The State Government could extend it for additional 30 days. The extension of the permit could be obtained from Fforeigners Registration Office (FRO) at Gangtok and office of the Superintendent of Police of the North, West and South Districts of Sikkom.

Those who wished to go for trekking in the interior area of Sikkim, require a Restricted Area Permit (RAP) or Protected Area Permit (PAP). RAP and PAP are going to be available from Police Check Post and office of the Department of Tourism in Gangtok. This will be obtainable for certain specified area for teams consisting of two or more foreigners subject to condition that the trekking programme is organized via a government registered travel agency.
